During the 1920’s the flowering of the African American culture was known as the Harlem renaissance. Although it was a cultural movement, it was also a social movement as well. On the other hand, the Renaissance started to mold by the poetry written by African American writers in the early 1920’s. Claude McKay and Langston Hughes were some of the top poets during the time. They expressed the black struggle through nature and showed the spiritual unity of the African Americans. Furthermore, the real notice of the Harlem Renaissance
was through the rising of Jazz Music by Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong. In addition, there were parades and people stood on the streets speaking of the black history. The origin of the renaissance was believed to have started during the Great Migration, when over five hundred thousand blacks fled north to get jobs and escape lynching. On the other hand, although there was this deep increase of African culture, people like the Ku Klux Klan were on the rise as well. In other words, although there was a growing acceptance of the African
culture, extreme racism was on the rise as well.
