Prohibition was the ban of alcohol in the United States starting in the 1920s. The 18th amendment in 1919 officially banned the manufacturing, distributing, and sales of alcohol. The era of prohibition caused a rise in organized crime, bootleggers, and speakeasies. For example, bootleggers were people who illegally distributed and sold alcohol. Furthermore, they were called bootleggers because they kept the flask of alcohol in their boots. In addition, speakeasies were on the rise during the prohibition era. Speakeasies were illegal bars that were kept hidden. They were commonly found in small restaurants, underworld dens, and could be accessed by showing the person by the door a special card or by personal introduction. Lastly, the prime oforganized crime was led by gangsters such as, Al Capone in Chicago.
Capone became part of gangs at a young age and when he got into a bar fight wasslashed in the face with a razor and earning the prominent nickname,“Scarface.” After being under suspicion of murder Capone fled to Chicago, just as congress approved of the 18th amendment. After finding a gang in Chicago Capone slowly rose to the peek after the gangs top leaders were killed or resigned. At just twenty six years old Capone was at the top of a ruthless gangster empire. During his reign he has believed to be nearly behind two hundred killings. He was more violent and merciless then other leaders at the time. For example, he clubbed people to death if they betrayed him or he would have his men beaut up people if they didn’t vote for his political candidates. Although
he was never proven guilty for any of his crimes he was charged in court withnever paying income taxes and was sent to Alcatraz and another penitentiary for eleven years. When he was released on probation he was suffering from a diseasecaused by syphilis. He later retired in his mansion, in Florida, and died in January of 1947.
